I can’t tell you how many times I have heard from a client that they have a website (whether they absolutely love it or not is a completely different story), but it just isn’t bringing them the traffic they’re hoping for.
They’ve invested into this hopefully wonderful website, it shares all their wins, their services, and how to get started with their business, but no one is seeing it.
So then I ask: When was the last time you updated it?
And without a doubt, I get these blank stares.

You invest in a brand new car that has all the bells and whistles. It’s your dream car.
Are you telling me that once you have your car you’re all set?
No of course not!
You need to put gas in the car and get an oil change every few months (at the minimum, I’m not a car person so that’s as far as this analogy is going)
Without giving your car gas and maintenance, it will inevitably stop performing the way you want it to. It will no longer get you to your destination and it will end up just sitting in your driveway for your neighbours to look at.

You invested in something new and shiny, showed it off for the first little bit, but after time the only people that see it are the ones that already know it exists.

Before we get into the details of maintaining your website, I always find it incredibly important to understand the why.
Why is it so important to haven’t updated website?
Just like with a car, having updated website will ensure that it is consistently operating at its peak performance. And when you have a website operating as efficiently as possible, you are setting yourself up for success and growth.
While having a visually outdated website impacts your business, failing to maintain a secure website could result in larger issues such as having your website hacked and both yours and your customers’ personal information stolen.
Which of course we would love to avoid at all costs.

So what can you do to make the most out of your website?
Well, the best way to maintain the integrity of your website is to ensure your content is always protected. To do this you want to be regularly checking your plug-ins and software for any updates.
Now, unfortunately all your favourite plugins don’t check each other’s calendars. So it’s important to check for updates on a regular basis, I recommend at least once a week. This will make sure that you’re plug-ins and software are the most part up to date.
Also, keep in mind that when you update your platform like WordPress or Elementor, all plug-ins will be need to be updated shortly after so you may see a surge at those points.
Now that you have an idea of how to make sure that you’re safe and secure, now we want to maintain the website in a way that will continue growing your organic reach.
If you are new here, organic reach is visitors that come by your content in a natural way. You may be familiar with organic reach on social media by using hashtags and location tags, but on your website using SEO and searchable content will increase your organic visitors.
The most important thing you can do for your organic traffic on your website is prove to search engines that it is an active website.

Think about anytime you’re looking something up.
If you’re anything like me, you will type random words hoping to find the title of a song you heard on TikTok.
While there are many factors as to how google chooses what shows up, one of the easiest ways to improve your chances on Google is to prove that your website is up to date with content and research.
In order to do this, you’re going to want to ensure that your website is regularly showcasing new + quality content.
And the easiest way to add new content to your website is by blogging.
By blogging you not only provide searchable content to your readers, but you also are showing search engines that you are a webpage worth displaying.
This may seem intimidating if you’re an entrepreneur with minimal support, but remember, never updating your website is like never filling up on gas and leaving your car in your driveway.
